Puppy care
1) Feeding-your puppy has been started on Royal Canine small breed puppy food.  You will be
given a bag of food when your puppy comes home.  Please keep your puppy on the same brand
of food, or if you are going to change foods, do so by mixing it with the new food for 3 to 5 days.
This will help decrease the chances of diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset caused by an abrupt
change.

Feed your puppy at least 4 times a day between 8-12 weeks, 3 times a day between 12-16
weeks, and twice a day after that.

Small breeds become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) very easily.  If young puppies go long
periods without food they can become lethargic and go into a coma.  Take to your veterinarian
immediately if your puppy is lethargic or unresponsive.

2) Your puppy will have received a set of shots at 6 weeks and 8 weeks.  It will have been
dewormed at 4, 6, and 8 weeks.  You will received copies of all procedures and vaccination,
when you pick up your puppy.

3) Your puppy will have a microchip implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades.  My
name and phone number will be under alternate contact. You will be given paperwork to add
your contact information into your name.

4) Dewclaws are removed at 5-7 days old.

5) Puppies that are sold as pet quality must be neutered or spayed by 6 months old.

6) Dental care is very important.  I recommend brushing teeth daily, CET enzyme dental chews,
high quality dry dog food, and regular cleaning.  Talk with your veterinarian about a regular
dental plan.

7) Heartworm disease is endemic within the United States.  I recommend yearly testing for
heartworms and monthly preventative.  Talk with your veterinarian.

Recommendations
1) Crate training - Your puppy has been crated at night and when we are not home.  This is for
the safety of your puppy.  Dogs like to have a safe place.  You will not be worried about what your
puppy has been into while you have been gone. These are inquisitive, busy dogs, and they will
find trouble if left to their own devises.
2) House training - Puppies will need to go outside to the bathroom after sleeping, eating and
periodically during play.  Your puppy has been paper trained in the house.  Move a soiled paper
outside to where you would like them to go to the bathroom, and consistently take your puppy to
the same spot.  Eventually, you will not need the paper.
3) Trim your puppies nails every few weeks.  Play with your puppies toes, ears, and mouth on a
regular basis. This way if you have to medicate your puppy at some time in the future, he or she
will be use to being handled.
4) Grooming and hygiene- Papillons have a silky coat that is easy to care for.  I recommend
brushing your puppy completely every few days. Although they do not generally need as much
grooming when they are young, they will learn to like it if done regularly and is a great time for
you to spend time with your dog.  Use a high quality pet shampoo, purchased from your
veterinarian.  Dogs have a different pH in the skin, therefore human products will dry out their
skin.
5) Veterinary care-
a) Your puppy should be examined by a veterinarian with 48 hours of coming home to verify its
health.
b) He or she will need a well puppy exam and further vaccinations at 12 and 16 weeks.
c) Neuter or spay your puppy between 4 and 6 months.
d) Young puppies can get dehydrated easily.  Make sure your puppy is eating and drinking
regularly.  If your puppy starts having diarrhea, vomiting, or does not eat consult your
veterinarian immediately. DON'T WAIT!
6) Keep your puppy isolated from other puppies until he or she is at least 4 months old and has
had its final set of vaccinations.  I recommend that you not take your puppy to dog parks, pet
stores, or puppy classes where they will be exposed to other dogs that have questionable
vaccinations. Canine Parvo Virus is a virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea and is a large
killer of young puppies. Don't take a chance. Your puppy should be fine around older dogs that
are current on all their vaccinations.
7) Once your puppy is over 4 months old, I recommend puppy classes.  You will be amazed how
smart these little dogs are and how quickly they learn.
